Regional Addiction
Prevention, Inc. (RAP) is a community-based, culturally sensitive,
non-profit substance abuse treatment, prevention and education
organization. Founded in 1970, RAP, Inc. employs the therapeutic
community approach to treatment. Within our highly structured,
but creatively run environments, clients are served as members
of a family within a community setting rather than as patients
in an institution.
Because giving
back to the community has been a major requirement, RAP’s umbrella
philosophy has been to incorporate programs for the community
good in its efforts both to treat substance abusers and to prevent
young people from becoming drug abusers.
Since our
founding, RAP, Inc. has been engaged in prevention efforts: community-wide,
long-term and inclusive media outreach such as our anti-PCP campaign
and our campaign against drug-related violence. An integral part
of the campaign was our work with young people to produce numerous
posters, flyers, post cards, etc. illustrating the drug-related
anti-violence campaign. These visual messages were actually designed
as a celebration of young people—focusing on the positive as a
counter-balance to the assaultive news reports of the late ‘80s
about youth violence. As an additional vehicle for reaching young
people during this period we distributed a prevention credo:
PREVENTION
IS…
Drug abuse
prevention is more than telling young people about the dangers
of becoming addicted.
Drug abuse
prevention is helping kids taste success in every area of their
lives.
It is helping them to develop strong and positive self-images.
It is helping them to understand how to make choices that will
support and bolster their self-image.
It is guiding them to take advantage of opportunities that will
lead to continuing success.
It is making sure they know who they are, who their forebears
were, and the role they must play in connecting past and the future.
Drug abuse
prevention is setting and achieving goals.
It is keeping busy at things you enjoy, it’s reaching out to help
someone.
It is being involved in your community.
It is believing that tomorrow will surely come.
It is accepting yourself; it is loving yourself; it is respecting
yourself.
It is respecting others.
It is having faith.
Drug abuse
prevention is being encouraged to do and to be your best.
It is being recognized for the good things you do.
Drug abuse prevention is all these things and more.
Based on our
more than three decades of experience providing program based
on integrity, sensitivity, and excellence, we demonstrate daily
that drug-free treatment on demand makes a difference in the community.
RAP, Inc.
is the community’s partner for substance abuse treatment, prevention,
and education now and for the future.
