GTN
Project
One of RAP’s critical program is named the Gaston T. Neal Project,
in honor of the well-accomplished teacher, educator, and playwright,
who was a pioneer and innovator in the fight against HIV/AIDS
and substance abuse. Among Mr. Neal's accomplishments are the
national Broadcasters Golden Reel Award for a play that empowers
women to encourage their spouses to use condoms.
The outreach workers and health educators in GTN Project for
HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted disease outreach education/prevention
initiative are committed and undaunted by distance: Outreach workers
literally “go where they are” and will conduct small, impromptu
group discussions on HIV/STD prevention and substance abuse with
at-risk persons anywhere, and seek to conduct repeat sessions
in that same area. They go to churches, schools, public housing
developments, women’s shelters, even street corner to provide
at-risk women and men with HIV/AIDS 101 education and distribute
condoms and information on condom use, contraceptive use, and
health education. they also teach empowering negotiation skills
to enable them to become agents of change. This initiative also
provides prevention case management, larger didactic HIV presentation
and health education prevention literature.
GTN Project main focus is to encourage at-risk persons to attend
a minimum of three GTN education/prevention seminars at community
locations. During these sessions, the health educators provides
information on HIV, substance abuse and mental health, as well
as information on female health issues, such as breast cancer
and reproductive health.
GTN Project was completed in 2004
