SHERO – The Big Five

1. Love of her people. The Shero must be Race Woman and a Womanist, dedicated to the survival and advancement of her racial group overall and her sisters specifically. This does not rule out concern or affection for other individuals or groups. It simply establishers her own racial and gender identity as primary factors in all decisions. This rule requires that the person be political at every level from choice of mate to source of income and requires a rejection of individualism in favor of the common good.

2. Commitment to Truth. The Shero must not lie directly or through voluntary silence employed to protect personal privilege, avoid unpleasant confrontations or secure individual economic advancement at the price of personal integrity of group empowerment.

3. Protective of Her Sisters. The Shero must accept responsibility for the protection of her sisters physically, economically and spiritually. She must identify dangerous individuals, substances and situations clearly as soon as they are known to her so that others will not be at risk.

4. Courage. The Shero must be courageous enough to confront her enemies when it is right and necessary, trusting her group to protect and sustain her, but not shirking when timely action is required without the kind of immediate support she might have liked.

5. The Long View. A Shero must have confidence in the ability of her group to make a collective commitment to struggle for freedom every minute of every day, each small victory joining with each other small victory until we reclaim our place in the universe as a community of free-women, freemen, beloved children and honored elders.
